Reaction to Government's Response to Smart Meters Prospectus - DECC must ensure benefit to consumers is at heart of the rollout

Reacting to the Government’s Response to the Smart Meters Prospectus, Joel Hagan, Chief Executive of Onzo, said:

“We welcome the Government’s commitment to the rollout of smart meters and giving consumers access to their energy information through a range of media and in-home displays, but feel strongly that a concerted effort must be made to maximise consumer benefit, as savings of £23 a year won’t be enough to convince people that the benefits of the rollout outweigh the costs.

“Key to the success of this rollout will be to ensure the UK smart meter system is designed to accommodate services that go beyond just electricity and gas – value-added services such as heating and hot water control, which utilise the smart grid communications infrastructure. Above all, good security engineering should not be compromised – it makes no sense to do smart metering twice.”
